The
Story Behind the Event...
Like many
things in life, creating something new is a combined result of
an evolution of thoughts, actions, events and people. And since
women love stories, we thought we'd share with you the story of
how it came to be
"The
Glass Slipper Ball Featuring the Best of the Chefs" debuted
in Pittsburgh, Pennslvania in 2004 . The current title sponsors
Tums and Oscal came on in 2005 and are now presenting this event
as it becomes replicated by other Zonta clubs throughout the country.
Houston is the first replication of this fabulously successful
event as we work toward bringing exposure and much needed revenue
to an 85 year old professional womens service organization - Zonta.
The Houston
chairperson, Kayleen Kill, was a former member of the Pittsburgh
club before moving to Houston in 1991. As luck would have it,
she read an article in Sports Illustrated about her old pal from
Pittsburgh, Debra Dion Krischke who produced a large International
Paintball Festival as well as a new fundraiser. Re-connecting
after 15 years they shared stories via e-mail about life and their
respective Zonta clubs. Kayleen heard about the Pittsburgh event
and the plans to take it to other Zonta clubs. The Glass Slipper
Ball was poised to go national, and it didn't take these two women
long to realize the Houston club was destined to be the first
replication.
From an idea
that started in a friends kitchen, to the chance reading of a
magazine, to the re-connecting of two friends, to one of the most
ambitious projects the Zonta club of Houston has undertaken, it
has been quite a journey. The event had to jump through committee
approval, board approval and finally membership approval not to
mention finding the right venue, at the right time of year, with
top notch chefs. Sometimes the stars just line up, and this event,
for women, by women, has a legacy of success that is grounded
in commitment, service and a dedication to excellence.
Whenever we
can be witness to the combined best effort of chefs, florists,
musicians, and volunteers - its magical. Thank you for supporting
this premier Houston event - it's truly women helping women, transform
lives - one club at a time.
There is a
saying that we are all born angels with only one wing, but by
locking arms we can fly. Bon Voyage and get ready for take-off!
Zontians are locking arms!!
